RESTOR

For most cataract patients, life without reading glasses or bifocals is something they either experienced before presbyopia or they just dreamed about for most of their lives. But today, the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL is turning those dreams into reality with its revolutionary lens technology, which is designed to allow patients to see clearly at all distances without bifocals or reading glasses. The AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL is now available and delivers a high level of glasses-free vision for cataract patients.

In the clinical study, 80% of patients receiving the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL reported that they never wear glasses for any activities. With the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL they can read a book, work on the computer, and drive a car – day or night – and play golf or tennis with an increased freedom from glasses. In fact, patients were so pleased with their vision, nearly 94% of patients said they would have the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL implanted again, if given the choice.

THE PROCEDURE

Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, and usually requires just a few hours of your time from start to finish. Your eye will be treated with anesthetic prior to the procedure so you’ll feel little, if any, discomfort. First, a tiny incision will be made in the eye allowing your surgeon to use a small instrument (about the size of a pen tip) to break up or wash away the cloudy cataract. Once the cataract is removed, the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL will be inserted through the same tiny incision and set into its permanent position.

After The Procedure

After the procedure you’ll rest for a short while before you go home. Your doctor will typically examine your eye within 24 hours. You’ll need to use prescription eye drops to guard against infection and help your eye heal. For a few days, you may need to wear a protective shield, especially at night to prevent you from rubbing your eye. Everyone heals somewhat differently, but most patients see well enough to return to most of their routine activities the day after surgery. Once both eyes have been treated, you will fully appreciate the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL and realize that your cataract was one thing you could definitely live without.

WHAT IS CRYSTALENS™?

Crystalens™ is a revolutionary new breakthrough in vision enhancement by Eyeonics. It is the first and only intraocular lens (IOL) replacement for cataracts that focuses like the eye's natural lens, allowing for continuous vision up close, far away, and all distances in between. By using the eye's muscle to move the lens backwards and forwards naturally in response to the brain's desire to see at different distances, Crystalens™ enables the eye to focus continuously and seamlessly through a range of distances, including near, far, and everything in between. Patients experience the same vision they had when they were younger, for most without the inconvenience of corrective lenses.

Crystalens™ is very different from other lens implants, especially intraocular lenses. The Crystalens™ implant allows your eye and its natural muscles to focus on objects at various distances. Intraocular lenses do not. They only allow you to focus on objects at a certain distance, and you may be required to wear glasses for near or middle vision. It's important to note that not everyone will gain 20/20 vision at all distances after this procedure. It is also important to point out that even after having this procedure done and having the possibility of having 20/20 vision, you still may not increase your chances to read or focus on objects in low light. As we get older, we lose our ability to focus on objects under these conditions. Our health and health of our eyes will also determine this outcome regardless of any type of refractive surgery.

THE PROCEDURE

The implant procedure is a safe and proven cataract procedure performed in an outpatient surgical facility. The procedure itself lasts about 20 minutes or less and is pain free. A few drops are put into your eye by the surgeon and an ultrasonic probe is used to remove the cloudy lens from the eye. The Crystalens™ implant is then put in place where the original lens used to be. When this procedure is complete, the doctor will put additional drops in your eye to prevent infection and help with any inflammation that may occur. The opening of the eye is very small and allows for quick healing. No stitches are required. Most people have 20/20 vision after the procedure but not everyone.

ONE EYE OR TWO?

The Crystalens™ procedure is normally performed in one dominant eye to determine the outcome of your vision in both eyes. Of course, both eyes usually develop cataracts, so in this case of two eyes having bad vision, the surgeon will prefer to wait two to three weeks before inserting a second implant, or implant in the second eye. For more information regarding this issue, it's best to consult with your surgeon.

WHO'S A CANDIDATE?

The Crystalens™ is ideally suited for men and women over 50 years of age with cataracts who want to not only restore clarity in their vision but restore their near, intermediate, and distance vision. Almost anyone who has cataracts is a candidate for the Crystalens™ procedure, so long as you are healthy and do not have any serious eye diseases or disorders like uncontrolled diabetes. You may also be a candidate even if you have had previous refractive surgery. The best way to find out if you are a candidate for this procedure is to visit your local eye doctor for an exam. If you have already had cataract surgery, you are not a candidate for this procedure.

The ReZOOM™ Multifocal Lens
Full Range of Vision and Greater Independence from
Glasses and Contact Lenses

Thanks to the latest advancements in multifocal lens implant technology, cataract surgery not only allows you to ReZoom life, it may allow you to 'see young again."

As we age, beginning around the age of 40, the natural lens inside the eye begins to harden and lose its flexibility.

This reduces the eye’s ability to change its focus from near to intermediate, to distance, and back again.

This is known as “loss of accommodation” or “presbyopia,” and its earliest symptom is difficulty seeing things up close. Bifocal and even trifocal glasses become necessary for some people to see clearly at all distances.

As the natural lens of the eye continues to deteriorate, it starts to become cloudy or brown. Vision becomes blurry, and colors lose their brilliance.

At first, frequent changes in glasses prescriptions can help, but left untreated, cataracts can lead to blindness.

The only way to see clearly after a cataract matures is to have it removed and then replaced with an intraocular lens, or IOL.

Monofocal IOL

ReZOOM™ Multifocal Lens

Until recently, patients undergoing lens implant surgery received a monofocal, or single focus IOL. Monofocal IOLs implanted in both eyes generally provide excellent distance vision, while patients often need spectacle correction for near and intermediate vision. In the late 1990s, Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) introduced its first multifocal IOL designed to provide multiple points of focus, thereby dramatically reducing the need for bifocals or trifocal glasses after surgery.

Today, with its many optical design enhancements, AMO’s second-generation ReZoom™ Multifocal IOL is providing patients with a full range of vision and greater independence from glasses or contact lenses than ever before. Clinical studies show that 92% of those receiving the ReZoom™ Lens technology “never”, or “only occasionally,” need to wear glasses.

The ReZoom™ Multifocal Lens Technology

Balanced View Optics™ Technology literally provides multiple focal points so you can see well at a variety of distances. The ReZoom™ Multifocal Lens has five uniquely proportioned visual zones designed to provide clear vision for different light and focal distances.
